Making an SEO-Friendly Backlink

Google's algorithms are both patented and even mysterious at times. One thing we do know is the importance of creating the right kind of backlinks.

What the heck's a backlink?

A backlink is merely a link somewhere on the Internet that points back to your website and they matter for at least two reasons. The first reason is that they bring you traffic. People see these links and click on them, ending up at your website. The second reason is that Google uses these links to learn about your website. Backlinks help determine where in search engines your website appears.

Here's an example.

Let's say ten people leave comments on Facebook describing the great dog food from some dog food company. The link takes you to that company's website. Google reads this page, sees the link, and thinks, "A-ha! This website must be about dog food — because those are the words in the link."

Backlinks help determine the fate of your website in the search world, so it's important that you create the right kinds of backlinks as you talk on the Internet. Never create a link like this one that doesn't really say anything. And don't bother making another link http://www.mplsmarketing.com that just prints out your web address. You need people clicking on keywords.

So how do you make these things? It's simple. Some blogs and websites help you by providing you with a link button (we offer one in the comments section of our own blog). Or you can write your own HTML code — if the website lets you add HTML to their website. If they do, the code works like this:

<a href="http://www.dogfoodcompany.com">Dog food</a>

There's an art in strategy in backlinking and we'll be discussing it more on the blog in the future. For now, that's it!
